just now when i was watching national geographic channel, i saw 1 of their ad's that kinda make me think..it made me think more than watching clips showing humongous smokes coming out of huge factory pipes like coloured farts or dead birds trapped on filthy mud like oil spills or huge part of ice's falling off another even bigger blocks of ice -.-
okay lets fly back to kuching...l will refer specifically to the chinese, coz im a chinese,lol...i dont expect everyone around to wear samfu or cheongsam or nyonya kebaya everyday down the streets, that will be weird...but i did notice there is quite a huge number of local kuching-nites that dont know how to speak their own dialects! fine, im a hokkien-hainanese but i cant really speak hainanese but my father is hokkien and my ties to the hokkien side of the family is closer. lucky me that the common dialect used in kuching is hokkien so i nonid to learn other dialects la..lol...if have the time, i would learn how to speak hainanese too..but these days, the situation is very different....younger generations either speak mandrin, 'mal-lish'/'rasa angmoh-licious' to their peers.
yes i know we are now living in a globalizing world...things haveto be in common so we will progress...but why are KL-lites so bloody proud speaking their cantonese loud loud and penang-ites(and the northern people) are also so bloody kiasu of their hokkien? most of the sarawakians staying in KL cant bloody settle down properly without learning their cantonese or hokkien in penang. today met 2 groups of KL-lites in sin chong choon coffeeshop and they speaking their cantonese loud loud and their poor local 'tourguide' had to understand what are they saying and reply them in mandrin.
now u see most chinese students in any local school will speak mandrin to each other(or english)...why, some schools have rules not to let students use dialects ? the worst being some parents will start to speak mandrin to them from the day they were born. a simple example is my foochow
after 2 years staying in west malaysia...i notice that the southern(malaccan) hokkien is also dying and less and less people speak them especially the young. what we should do is practice our own dialect..usually following the fathers side at least!, maybe when gathering with our own family members or what...and learn the common dialects like hokkien in kuching...hey it reflects our identity as kuching-nites ok, just like those canton-KL and penang-hokkien peeps. even tho they belong to other dialects, they still speak their common dialect there proudly wat!...the feeling that i get when i hear other kuchingnites started to speak hokkien whenever im in the departure hall in KLIA or LCCT is like...'it feels so home again' and u just feel proud being a kuchingnite...u know what i mean... so guys...start to speak hokkien loud-loud to your local friends...hahaha...coz if ure staying in kuching...and u dunno how to speak hokkien....then ure a banana...lolx
kuching roxs!
